Upcoming Workshop: Ocean Governance for Indigenous Peoples

Hosted by International Ocean Institute - Canada, this free interdisciplinary workshop will take place 5th - 9th December 2022 in Halifax as an in-person event. Planned with and for Indigenous Peoples, it will combine presentations, discussions and field trips, and will feature Indigenous speakers among the specialists sharing their knowledge and expertise. Based on guiding principles of Integrity, Reciprocity, Respect and Interaction, participants will explore key aspects of Ocean and Coastal Governance with particular attention to Indigenous needs, perspectives and knowledge systems. A final certificate will be available upon completion of the workshop.


This workshop is for Indigenous Peoples from Mi’kma’ki, Wolastoqiyik and Peskotomuhkatik (Maritime Provinces) and the group size will be capped at 15 participants. The workshop is designed primarily for those engaged in the ocean/coastal/environmental field but applicants with other backgrounds could also be considered, space permitting. Accommodation (for out-of-town participants), meals and transportation will be covered, with co-funding from Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Ocean and Science Research Foundation.
